Go Bus disaster

- Anna Penney St. John’s

Another article on the terrible service by Go Bus provided to our handicapped and poor people of St. John’s and Mount Pearl.

Another dismissive tone by Metrobus CEO, Judy Powell: it’s not my fault, blame the users or lack of drivers.

No comments from councillors Burton, Froude, or Ellsworth, who are on St. John’s Transportation Committee.

So you can see what the users are up against. I used the service for years with my darling deceased brother, Terry. We waited forever to be picked up, and when we were, we often passed our designation and spent another 20 minutes on the bus as the scheduling was so screwed up. It wasn’t the drivers, they were lovely but felt totally done by from management. I always felt the tone from Metrobus was you were lucky to have us. I’d like to see Judy Powell wait 40 minutes for a bus with a handicapped brother who needed the bathroom.

I don’t understand why the provincial government doesn’t take over this service. It is clear the city is inept to provide good service. With the government’s focus on missed medical appointments and the costs involved, surely they can see how many appointments will be missed because of the erratic scheduling from Go Bus. If we can invest in Disney Films, surely we can invest in securing a respectable service to our handicapped and poor.

In closing, I am delighted I won’t have to use this service for the foreseeable future.

I still feel, though, that our handicapped and poor people need our respect. Maybe the Go Bus handbook – which hasn’t been updated since January 2017 – would be a good place to start.
