December 5, 1933-May 20, 2023. Passed peacefully away at St. Clare’s Mercy hospital May 20, 2023, Michael Joseph Coombs (formerly) of Portugal Cove South. Predecease­d (November/22) by his wife of 61 years, Rose Mary (Hewitt). Also predecease­d by his parents, Patrick and Catherine “Jane” (White); his sisters, Violet (Jim) Perry and Josephine (Austin) St. Croix; his brothers, Cyril (Bridget), Phonse (Carmel), France and Don. He raised the bar to great heights as a husband, father and grandfathe­r, hence; his life will be celebrated, forever more, in the countless memories of his easy-going character and entertaini­ng anecdotes. Forever appreciate­d and cherished by his children, Edwina (Pat) Ward, Portugal Cove South; Reg (Sherry), Seal Cove; Michelle (Robert) Stewart, Pictou Co. N.S., Pius (Carmelita) Tors Cove and Calvin (Susan) Witless Bay. His character and stories will continue on in his grandchild­ren and great-grandchild­ren whom he loved dearly. He leaves his brother, Herbert (Violet); and sister, Peggy (William) White; sisters-in-law, Ann and Anna Coombs; along with his extended Hewitt inlaws and their families. Coming from a large family, in a tightly knit community, he leaves many nieces and nephews and wonderful friends including his hunting buddy/good friend, Peter Dunne. He also leaves his fellow residents and staff of Admiral’s Coast Retirement Home, Kelligrews where he spent the last few years living (as he would say) “free and easy while jogging along”. Cremation has taken place. Visitation with family at Fahey’s Funeral Home Trepassey Sunday, May 28 (2-9 p.m). Funeral Service: at Holy Redeemer Church, Trepassey at 11 a.m. Monday, May 29 with Interment immediatel­y following at Holy Rosary Cemetery, Portugal Cove South.
