Reserve your spot on starting line
Registration for 96th Tely 10 Road Race opens Tuesday
As a light snowfall hit St. John’s Monday afternoon, it seemed like it was a little early to start thinking about the annual Tely 10 Road Race.
However, with registration for the 96th running of the race opening on Tuesday, Feb. 27, it was probably the perfect time to start the conversation.
“We are so excited about it and we’re looking forward to it,” said Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association executive director George Stanoev. “We hope the winter is over soon and we get back to doing what we’re doing.
“We love it.”
EARLIER THAN USUAL
The registration date for the 2204 race is two weeks earlier than usual. The reason for that is the date of the race.
This year, as it was last year, the Tely 10 is scheduled for the fourth Sunday in June — this year it is June 28.
It will be the second consecutive year that the race has been run in late June after a pair of years where it was moved away from its historical July dates.
Stanoev says it provides a bit of stability for the race for the first time since they’ve come out on the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’ve seen a little bit of growth past the pandemic, and this is kind of the first year past the pandemic where we feel that there is some consistency,” he said.
REGISTRATION CAP
This year, organizers are capping the number of race participants at 2,800.
So, they’re encouraging racers to sign up early to not only secure their spot in the historic race, but also so runners can truly start their training.
“The earlier, the better,” said Stanoev. “You know what you’re up to and you want to put some time and effort into it and planning, so secure your spot.”
The registration officially kicks off the countdown to the 2024 Tely 10.
Stanoev and his partners are looking forward to seeing what this race will hold for them and the athletes.
“Right now, we are happy with the fourth Sunday in June, and we’ll see where that will take us,” he said.
