Eastern jumps into medal lead with 12

St. John’s-north and Western make up the Top 3

You might as well have called it championsh­ip Tuesday at the 2024 Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Winter Games being held in Gander.

Gold medals and championsh­ips were handed out as each of the first-half sports wrapped up their competitio­ns.

In male hockey, Avalon got an overtime goal to knock off their St. John’s-north opponents and claim gold with a 4-3 victory at the Gander Community Centre.

Prior to that, Mount Pearlsouth beat Central 3-1 to pick up the bronze medal.

At the Gander Curling Club, the female curling crown belonged to St. John’snorth as they beat Avalon 6-5 in the gold medal game. Members of the gold medal winners are Austyn Boone, Marissa Gushue, Mya Ivany and Rory Linstead.

Avalon is comprised of Megan Blandford, Kiersten Devereaux, Julie Lomholtfar­rell and Katarina Smith. The bronze went to Western (Marissa Billard, Charlotte Power, Julia Strickland and Sarah Thomas).

On the male curling side, St. John’s-north beat Mount Pearl-south 3-2 in the gold medal game, while the Host team picked up the bronze.

INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS

It was more than team sports that handed out gold medals on Tuesday as table tennis and cross-country skiing wrapped things up with their individual events.

Of a possible six medals in the male and female 5-km cross-country event, Western picked up four medals. In the male event, Western’s Alexander Merrigan won gold, while his teammate Evan May crossed the line in second. Behind them was St. John’snorth skier Matthew Earle.

On the female side, Eastern’s Jocelyn Coates won gold, while Western’s Juliette Colbourne and Georgia Wiseman finished second and third, respective­ly.

In table tennis, Avalon’s Peter Quinlan defeated Eastern’s Logan Whalen 3-0 in the final of the junior male competitio­n. Central’s Ryan Goulding won the bronze medal.

In the youth male competitio­n, Eastern’s Evan Denty beat St. John’s-north player Daniel Patey 3-1 in the final to claim gold. Eastern’s Liam Ralph won the bronze.
