Tracking a series of disturbances through mid-march

- ALLISTER AALDERS weather@saltwire.com @allistercanada Allister Aalders is the Saltwire weather specialist.

Unsettled weather isn’t uncommon in March, but we sure are struggling to string together a nice stretch of weather.

The latest system brought a mix of rain, snow and high winds to the Maritime provinces, and is now delivering the same weather to Newfoundland and Labrador where precipitation will become more scattered today.

Because the low will stall offshore through mid-week, we can expect periods of rain and snow showers to spiral around it through mid-week as northerly winds also pull cooler air into the region.

Much of central and western Newfoundland can expect 10 to 30 cm of snow through tonight and Wednesday, but higher elevations could see 30 to 50 cm.

Meanwhile, trace to five centimetres is forecast elsewhere in the region, but Prince Edward Island, and higher terrain in Nova Scotia — especially in the Annapolis Valley and North Shore, as well as New Brunswick, should expect five to 15 cm with local amounts up to 25 cm not ruled out.

Additional rainfall is not forecast to be significant.

Our weather will settle somewhat during the second half of the week, but the lack of a strong high-pressure ridge will keep more clouds than sunshine in our skies.

The next system I’m watching will develop over the Midwest and approach the region this weekend.

The track and timing into our region are still somewhat unclear, but a mix of snow and rain is possible on Saturday for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and P.E.I. Unless the track shifts, this should bypass Newfoundland and Labrador.

I’m then watching a Pacific low that will swing down from the Territories and into eastern Canada later this weekend. As it meets separate energy set to move up the Eastern Seaboard, we could once again be looking at a rain-snow mix early next week.

Too soon to call that Sheila’s Brush, but a visit from Sheila this season isn’t out of the question given this active pattern will persist.

I also don’t see a great deal of movement with our temperatures this week, especially at night, as we will be near to above normal.
