Passed peacefully away at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital early in the morning of Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Graham A. Wells, age 76. Graham was born on July 29, 1947, to Marg and Jim, an inshore fisherman from the Outer Battery. In the first years of his life, the “white plague” of tuberculos­is landed his parents in the sanatorium. Graham spent his formative years in the Church of England Orphanage, where he found a second family of brothers he would keep for the rest of his life. In 1967, Graham began what would be a distinguis­hed career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. In October of 1969, Graham returned home to marry the love of his life, Elaine Walsh. During the October Crisis of 1970, the newly married Graham and Elaine moved to Ottawa where he served the RCMP Security Service as they engaged the Front de libération du Québec. Graham retired from the force in 1977 and began a new chapter of his life by enrolling as a mature student at the University of Ottawa, where he studied Law. He was called to the bar of Newfoundla­nd and Labrador in 1981 and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2010. His respected legal career spanned over 40 years. Graham retired from the practice of law in 2021 to undertake what he considered his life’s most important work, spoiling his grandchild­ren. Graham is predecease­d by his father, James (1978), his mother, Marguerite (2008), his brother-in-law, Derek Luscombe (2008) and his brother Thomas (2015) (Judy). Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, his wife of 54 years, Elaine, three sons, Graham (Adrienne), Christophe­r (Robin), and Alexander (Jennifer); granddaugh­ter, Niamh Wells (Graham) her mother Allison, grandsons, Jack Wells (Alexander) and Leopoldo Wells (Christophe­r). His brothers, Ralph (Noreen) and James (Pam), and his sister Donna. Aunt Gertrude Whittaker. Graham’s best friend for over half a century, Donald Bursey (Barbara), his only god-daughter Jillian Bursey and their entire extended family; his closest ally Peter J. Byrne (Joan), his trusted staff at the firm for over 20 years, Brian Griffin, Stacey Porter and Kathy Hurley as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and people who were pulled into his orbit by his magnetic presence and generous nature. The family would like to extend a thank you to the staff of the Kidney Care Centre at Mount Pearl Square, the Dialysis Unit of St. Clare’s, Dr. Robert Woodland, Dr. Sean Martin, and Dr. David Harrington. Cremation has taken place. Wake will be at Caul’s Funeral Home 84 Lemarchant Road, St. John’s, Monday, April 22nd, and Tuesday, April 23rd, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the Caul’s Chapel on Wednesday, April 24th, at 11 a.m. The family will be scattering his ashes in a private ceremony at a later date.
