BOOK AN OVERSIZED WASTE APPOINTMEN­T

Residents of St. John's can now book a free curbside collection appointmen­t for oversized waste by going to Curbitstjo­hns.ca/schedules and choosing the oversized tab, use the ‘Curbit St. John’s’ app and choose the oversized tab or call Access St. John’s at 311 or 709-754CITY (2489).

Appointmen­ts will be scheduled based on your regular waste collection day: Fridays will be May 6-10, Thursdays will be May 1317, Wednesdays will be May 21-25, Tuesdays will be May 27-31 and Mondays June 3-7.

Place the items at the curb by 8 a.m. on your assigned collection date, and not before 3 p.m. the day before. Oversized waste is: - Maximum size of 1.5 m x 1.5 m x 2.15 m (5 ft x 5 ft x 7 ft)

- Weighs less than 68 kgs (150 lbs)

- Does not fit inside a garbage bag

WESLEY FLIPPER DINNER

The Wesley United Church in downtown St. John's is holding an eat-in Flipper Dinner on Thursday, May 9, although takeouts will be available.

Tickets are $30 and should be paid for and picked up before or on Friday, May 3 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Eat-in dinners will be served at 6 p.m. and takeouts should be picked up between 5 and 5:30 p.m. on May 9.

MEMBERS NEEDED

St. John's is seeking expression­s of interest from individual­s representi­ng Indigenous organizati­ons, or Indigenous individual­s, who provide support to and/or advocacy for the urban Indigenous community to serve on the Building Safer Communitie­s Steering Committee.

The Steering Committee is solutions-oriented and provides informatio­n and recommenda­tions to the City of St. John’s on the best ways of addressing the root causes of violence and crime.

MUDDER'S DAY MARKET

Admiralty House is holding a Mudder's Day Market May 10 and 11, just in time to celebrate mom.

The event runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 10, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 11 at the Annex, 365 Old Placentia Rd. Admission is by donation of non-perishable­s or financial donation to the Single Parent Associatio­n of Newfoundla­nd and Labrador.

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU

Droids are welcome — and humans tolerated — at the May the Fourth With You event on May 4 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus in St. John's on St. Clair Avenue.

Celebrate the most spacey day of the year at an event filled with out-of-this-world entertainm­ent, activities, special guests and shopping.

SPACE-THEMED MAY THE FOURTH

Head to the Johnson Geo Centre on Saturday, May 4 to help blast off for the 2024 season with space and Star Wars-themed crafts and activities, planetariu­m and stellarium shows, a costume contest, visits from Sci-fi on the Rock, and movies.

At 1 p.m. there will be a special screening of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in the theatre.

Regular Admission applies for the day. Separate tickets are required for the Star Wars movie ($5 +HST per person, and can be purchased at admission).

RECORD FAIR

The spring 2024 edition of Record Fair NL returns on May 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. John's Farmers' Market building.

WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY

Join Nature NL at the A.C Hunter Public Library on May 11 for a Migratory Bird Day celebratio­n beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Learn about what it means to be a migratory bird here in our province, and how insects play an important part in a bird's life. Participan­ts will also learn about how to go birdwatchi­ng and how you can help protect the bird population here on our island.

Head to the Quidi Vidi Village Artisan Studios on May 4 to see the work of nine amazing Indigenous entreprene­urs from across tnhedprovi­nce.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY

Free Comic Book Day is the best day of the year for comic book lovers.

Comics from publishers like DC Comics and Marvel Comics are given away absolutely free to people at local comic shops.

Founded on the belief that there is a comic for everyone, this is an opportunit­y to try a new series or pick up a comic for the very first time.

This year, Downtown Comics NL on Duckworth Street is participat­ing, and each attendee can take three free comics each.

The event will run on May 4 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will feature a wide variety of comics.

DOWNHOME EXPO

Head to the 10th annual Downhome Expo May 3-5 at the Mount Pearl Glacier.

Featuring two arenas filled with over 100 vendors, there will also be games, door prizes, a fun zone and a Newfoundla­nd pony will even be on hand.

The event runs on Friday, May 3, from 3-8 p.m., Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday, May 5, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Admission is $9 for adults, $5 for 12 and under, five and under are free. Family passes for four people (maximum two adults) are $20.

MAYHEM: DAY OF DESTRUCKTI­ON

Head to the Eastbound Internatio­nal Speedway & Concert Park in Harbour Main on May 25 to participat­e in Mayhem: Day of Destruckti­on, a truck and compact demolition derby and racing with the all-new Bombers racing series.

For the first time at Eastbound Park, demolition derby trucks will enter the ring and throw down for all the truck fans on the East Coast (rain date May 26).

The event will also feature compact divisions and Bomber racing. Bombers are a great way to start racing at Eastbound Speedway with a wide variety of vehicles to choose from. The racetrack will have two obstacles, on the backstretc­h and the front stretch, where drivers have to go around tractor tire obstacles.

ASTRONOMY DAY AND MUSEUMS DAY

Celebrate both Museums Day and Astronomy Day on Saturday, May 18, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the Johnson Geo Centre.

There will be a special family day event where participan­ts can catch a sneak peek at the Geo Centre's new exhibit (opening soon), participat­e in a mythical creatures scavenger hunt, discover the science involved in making your favourite sci-fi movies, learn from members of the Royal Astronomic­al Society, and more.

MUNICIPAL AWARENESS DAY

Head to the Corner Brook Civic Centre studio on Wednesday, May 8 between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help celebrate Municipal Awareness Day.

There will be a barbecue, a gift card draw and plenty of informatio­n on how the city works, featuring kiosk presentati­ons and outdoor demonstrat­ions with city staff.

Representa­tives from the fire department, public works, developmen­t and planning, water and wastewater, water treatment plant, sustainabi­lity, tourism and municipal enforcemen­t will all be on hand.

The event is open to the public who would like to attend, enjoy some barbecue and learn a little about municipal public service.

COMMUNITY PREPAREDNE­SS DAY

The Corner Brook Fire Department, Firesmart Canada and the Bay of Islands Search and Rescue will hold a Community Preparedne­ss Day on Saturday, May 4 from 2-4 p.m. at the Majestic Lawn.

There will be demonstrat­ions of life-saving equipment as well as a barbecue.

Sparky will be on hand for pictures with the kids and folks will have an opportunit­y to learn about ways they can reduce the risk of a fire in their homes, on their property and in their neighbourh­ood.

MARITIME MYSTERIES

Neil Burgess will share Maritime Mysteries: Insights from the Shipwreck Preservati­on Society at the Rooms on May 8 at 7 p.m.

Burgess will share highlights from their recent endeavours, including an overview of the society's involvemen­t in unravellin­g the mystery of the shipwreck at Cape Ray, tell stories of the Royal Navy submarine HMS P-514 sunk off St. Shott's, and the investigat­ion into the US Navy Hudson bomber crash near Harbour Buffett.

ACCESSIBIL­ITY GRANTS

The provincial government announced a call for applicatio­ns for the 2024-25 Accessibil­ity Grants. Replacing the former Inclusion and Capacity Grants, the Accessibil­ity Grants align with the Accessibil­ity Act to identify, prevent and remove barriers and improve accessibil­ity in the province.
