MARTIN, Dr. Wilfred Benjamin Weldon

April 9, 1940 – April 30, 2024

Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on April 30th, 2024, at the age of 84 years. Wilfred was born in Hickman's Harbour Trinity Bay to Benjamin and Maggie Martin. He was 1 of 11 children. He received his schooling at Hickman’s Harbour, Shoal Harbour, and Clarenvill­e. He received degrees from Memorial University (B.A., and M.A., in Sociology and B.ED.), and York University (PH.D. in Sociology). He was a Professor of Sociology at the University of New Brunswick from 1972-1979. He received the University of New Brunswick's Excellence in Teaching Award in 1977. He joined the Faculty of Education, Memorial University in 1979. He retired in 1998 and was appointed Professor Emeritus at Memorial University.

Left to mourn with loving and cherished memories are his wife and best friend, Eileen (Marsh) of 57 years; brothers, Charlie (Ivy) Martin, Ross (Donna) Martin, Sisters Lillian Martin, Judy (Stanley) Sparkes; brother-in-law, Victor Wiseman and brother-in-law, Eric (Gladys) Marsh; as well as a large circle of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Predecease­d by parents, Ben and Maggie Martin; sister and brother-in-law, Ruby (Harvey) Brown, Margaret (Dave) Elder; sister, Pearl Wiseman, sister, Ivy Kathleen and sister, Ivy Olive Cecily; and brother, Wilfred Abraham James; and nephew, Wade Martin.

Wilfred was an active member of the community, and church. Another love of his was the outdoors. Whether he was trouting at one of the ponds around Hickman’s Harbour, on a snowmobile trip to Deer Harbour in winter, or out in the boat. He was content with the tranquilit­y that nature provided. Wilfred was also very passionate about writing and has written extensivel­y in both Sociology and Education. His writings have appeared in many national and internatio­nal journals.

Wilfred traveled extensivel­y Nationally and Internatio­nally, but his favourite spot was at his home in Hickman’s Harbour.

Visitation­s at Barrett's Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, St. John's Thursday May 2nd, from 2-4 p.m., and 7-9 p.m. and at Vardy's Funeral Home, Hickman's Harbour on Friday, May 3 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Saturday May 4, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to be held on Sunday, May 5, at 2 p.m. from Hickman’s Harbour United Church. Interment to follow at the United Church cemetery Hickman’s Harbour. Donations in his memory can be made to Memorial Fund United Church, Hickman’s Harbour or Dr. Wilfred B.W. Martin Scholarshi­p Fund, Department of Education, Memorial University.
