Elliott running in Wolfville
Wendy Elliott, a candidate in Wolfville, recently provided responses to a Q&A SaltWire is providing to municipal election candidates. Q. What's your full name?
A. Wendy Ann Elliott
Q. What position are you running for?
A. Wolfville town council
Q. Where are you from? A. Wolfville, N.S.
Q. What did you do before you decided to run for office?
A. I was a newspaper reporter in the eastern Annapolis Valley for 40 years.
Q. Why have you chosen to run in this election campaign?
A. Over my first term on council, I learned a lot – and that's on top of covering town affairs for several decades. Municipal government is complex and fascinating (serving on the board of the Valley Waste Management Authority and its current legal quagmire certainly taught me that). I feel I'm well educated about Wolfville and area municipal affairs, and can contribute meaningfully for another four years.
Q. What strengths would you bring to council if you are elected?
A. I am a good listener and trust this openness aids in reflecting Wolfville citizens' interests. Council has strong interpersonal debates and a co-operative attitude is vital. My years reporting on council have given me a substantial corporate memory. I am active in many community organizations, including several community theatre groups directing large groups of all ages. Volunteering on the heritage advisory committee and Wolfville Historical Society deepened my appreciation of Wolfville's heritage. I researched and wrote three new information panels in the downtown. I support improving our popular library facilities. Observing the town's growing dynamic vibe, I advocate for appropriate economic development.
Q. What do you see as the biggest strength/asset of the community/ region and what measures would you take to capitalize on them?
A. Wolfville and Kings County are blessed by climate, agriculture, heritage, and culture, but it is our people who make us strong. There are those who've called for improved regional marketing, but locally real estate is already moving quickly. The COVID-19 pandemic has only bumped up interest in the local housing stock. Folks want to live here because we offer a caring and concerned community. We can never take those attributes for granted.
Q. What one message do you hope gets out to the voters during this election campaign?
A. Pure and simple - voting matters. Q. How can people contact you? A. Phone 902-542-2533; e-mail welliott@bellaliant.net
