Ty Walsh, a candidate in Berwick, recently provided responses to a Q&A SaltWire is providing to municipal election candidates.

Q. What’s your full name?

A. Tyler “Ty” Walsh

Q. What’s the position you’re running for?

A. Councillor at large for the Town of Berwick

Q. Where are you from?

A. Born and raised in and around Berwick.

Q. What did you do before you decided to run for office?

A. After attending Saint Mary’s University and NSCC Kingstec, I worked for nearly a decade at Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre in Waterville, before taking time to be a stay-athome dad. For the last two years, I have worked for Canada Post in several capacities.

Q. Why have you chosen to run in this election campaign?

A. I’m proud of the progress made by our entire team at Town of Berwick. Together, we have revitalized infrastructure, increased the town's assets, taken further strides towards renewable energy/climate leadership, and built new strengthened municipal partnerships. By cultivating a welcoming environment, we have attracted new businesses, developments, and young families to the town. I love this town, the people, businesses, community organizations.

Q. What strengths would you bring to council if you are elected?

A. I am reoffering as a more experienced council member. I believe a more informed town is better able to communicate and converse with

council and the town on what matters most. I have worked very hard making our transit routing more accessible, growing Berwick Gala Days, increasing our town’s information sharing capacity, and strengthening town relationships and our networking capability.

Q. What do you feel is the key challenge facing the community/region and how would you work to address it?

A. Berwick is still learning how to change and adapt to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The last year especially has highlighted the need to have serious discussions and actions towards diversity and anti-discrimination. From the Black Lives Matter movement, to Pride month, to recognizing Aboriginal history, there are many areas where we need to push for growth, progress, and understanding. There are many financial challenges for operating a small town (too).

Q. How can people contact you?

A. I can be reached via phone/text at 902-300-1598
