Darrell Pelton, who is running in District 6 for Kings County council, recently provided responses to a Q&A SaltWire is providing to municipal election candidates.

Q. What’s your full name?

A. Darrell Pelton

Q. Where are you from?

A. I was born and raised in Waterville, Kings County, NS and continue to be a resident of Waterville. I brought up my three girls in the village of Waterville and to this day they still reside in Kings County along with my eight grandchildren. I live at the homestead that my grandfather, Augustus Reeves, built, and my parents brought up me along with my six siblings in this house and my mother

Marguerite Reeves resided at the homestead until her passing in March 2020.

Q. What did you do before you decided to run for office?

A. I have always been a hard worker and have lived on a modest income for the largest part of my working years, for the last 20-some years I have been employed with Bargain Harleys. Life was not always easy raising three girls and working full time, it left me no time to do some things I would have liked to have gotten involved with. At this stage of my life, I have the time to devote to you.

Q. Why have you chosen to run in this election campaign?

A. The reason I have chosen to run for District 6 at this time is because things are not getting better in Kings County and with the onset of COVID-19, things have gotten worse. Council spending is getting out of control, small businesses have closed, and people are doing with less every day. I was hoping that the County of Kings would take this opportunity to re-visit some of their own decisions in the way they operate but to my sad dismay, operations are as usual.

Q. What do you feel is the key challenge facing the community/region and how would you work to address it?

A. COVID-19 has hit the world in an intense way; it has forced businesses to operate in a very different manner for those who have been able to stay open. I was hoping that the County of Kings would take the opportunity to re-visit some of their own decisions in the way they operate but to my sad dismay operations are as usual. Stumbling blocks and red tape are still huge barriers that developers are facing today, and the mindset must be changed and become more proactive.
