Valley Credit Union supports NSCC student fundraiser
Donation to benefit Fundy Interchurch Food Bank
Valley Credit Union recently supported the efforts of the second-year students enrolled in NSCC’s financial products and systems class by agreeing to match up to $1,000 of their fundraising contribution to the Fundy Interchurch Food Bank, the chosen beneficiary of their service-learning project, which sees them volunteer to support a worthy non-profit organization.
“With the many restrictions and an economy leading into a recession due to the pandemic, many families in our community struggle to make ends meet. When emergencies arise, we are often forced to choose between buying food or paying for heat, water or even a home,” says Kelly Chapman, a student in NSCC’s financial services program and one of the organizers for the fundraiser. “We decided to help our community strive to lessen the impact of hunger by offering our support to the Fundy Interchurch Food Bank.”
The class of 17 students collected 22 bags of food and $1,325 in donations. With Valley Credit Union’s contribution, they donated a total of $2,325 and 245 kg of food to the food bank.
“It is so awesome that so many students participated and (partnered) in this initiative. Helping out folks in our own backyard gives its own special reward,” says Catharine Herber, talent and member insight manager. “We are thankful to be a part of it, but the students did all the heavy lifting.”
The Fundy Interchurch Food Bank is a volunteer organization committed to providing emergency food relief to individuals and families in an area generally comprising part of Greenwich, Port Williams, New Minas, Kentville, Coldbrook and surrounding areas.
