Mother’s Day is just around the corner, so it’s time for families to start planning ways to treat the special moms in their lives. There are many creative ways to celebrate. Here are five simple ideas that are sure to make moms feel loved.

BUY A THOUGHTFUL GIFT

Every mom has different tastes, so make sure you match the gift you purchase to her interests. For example, a basket filled with a book, treats and tea or coffee is perfect for a mom who loves to read. If you aren’t quite sure what to get, you can never go wrong with a gift certificate or flowers.

GIVE HER THE DAY OFF

If you ask any mom what she really wants for Mother’s Day, you’ll likely hear that she wants a break — a break from making decisions, from planning activities, from the ongoing to-do list, from cooking, from laundry, from cleaning and from children fighting.

So, when you are planning the perfect day for the special mom in your life, focus on activities and gifts that make her feel like she is getting a real break. Try to let mom get extra sleep, plan activities without asking her what she wants to do, get the groceries, cook for her or take her out, do the laundry and/or clean the house and car.

Trust me, these are the most valuable gifts you can give a mom.

COOK OR BAKE SOMETHING SPECIAL

Breakfast in bed is a traditional favourite and you can make it extra special by spelling out the word “LOVE” with food. Bacon can be shaped into the letter “L,” a doughnut or bagel makes a good “O,” a piece of French toast or a pancake cut out with a heart-shaped cookie cutter looks like a “V” and berries can easily be arranged in the shape of an “E.”

Also, make sure to clean up

all the mess you make in the kitchen.

Creating edible bouquets is fantastic, too. Add chocolate bars or cake pops to the top of wooden skewers, gather the bottoms of the skewers with an elastic to form a bouquet and wrap the arrangement in tissue paper. It’s such an easy and inexpensive DIY.

WRITE IT DOWN

I have a keepsake box full of heartfelt notes from my boys and I treasure every one of their thoughtful cards and notes. As a mom, there really isn’t a more meaningful gift to receive.

MAKE IT YOURSELF

Store-bought gifts are great, but no mom can resist the beautiful handmade treasures lovingly crafted by her children. A few wonderful options include jewelry made from cut-up paper straws and beads, a keychain, yarn-wrapped jars and bottles, flowers made from paper and buttons, a buttoncovered frame, a painted canvas and/or a “World’s Greatest Mother” medal made from paper and ribbon.

No matter how you choose to celebrate, it’s important to show moms they’re loved and appreciated. Happy Mother’s Day!
