Police urge caution as streets get busy
With the recent warm weather and the province's reopening plan in effect, police are reminding drivers to practice caution with increased foot traffic in downtown Wolfville.
In a recent news release, Kings District RCMP encouraged pedestrians and drivers to be extra vigilant at crosswalks in the downtown area. Police have already had several reports of drivers failing to yield to pedestrians as well as pedestrians jaywalking across Main Street. They also advise drivers to focus on the road, leaving distractions like cellphones alone and be ready to yield to pedestrians–– especially when turning at intersections and near transit stops.
"If a vehicle has stopped in front of you or in the lane next to you, it may be yielding for a pedestrian," said police.
Traffic officers warn drivers to expect the unexpected and always slow down, as pedestrians may be jaywalking.
Pedestrians should be careful at intersections and watch for drivers turning left or right through the crosswalk. Drivers may be focused on oncoming traffic and not see walkers.
Pedestrians must not jaywalk, always use crosswalks and follow the pedestrian signs and traffic signals. Police said it's not safe to assume a driver sees a pedestrian, so they suggest making eye contact with drivers as a safety tip. Police also noted it's vital for pedestrians to be as reflective as possible in low-visibility to make it easier for drivers to see them.
