Millions invested in affordable housing

Nova Scotia is investing millions into affordable housing, following recommendations from the Nova Scotia Affordable Housing Commission.

In a recent news release, government officials announced $25 million, split into four investment streams, to build new housing units and repair current public housing to decrease cost and reduce emissions.

A total of $20 million will directly support affordable housing units, and $2.5 million will add more affordable units co-created with other housing organizations.

The commission estimates 600 to 900 affordable units could be built in the coming years with such an investment."Affordable housing is a key strategic sector that drives economic growth, improves the health of Nova Scotians and moves us closer to social equity," Housing Minister Geoff MacLellan said.

The remaining $2.5 million will be split between $2 million for repairs and efficiency upgrades to current housing and $500,000 for municipal housing needs assessments.

"This investment positions us to help more people have a safe, affordable place to call home," said MacLellan.

The provincial government has put out a call for proposals for innovative projects to create affordable housing as of July 6. The first new units are expected to be complete in 12 to 18 months.

"As housing regulators and the leaders who understand local challenges the best, municipalities are crucial partners for creating more affordable housing,” said Municipal Affairs Minister Brendan Maguire. “Providing funding for needs assessments is a good place to start, but we understand that it is only the first step. We will remain committed to working together to find funding, make connections and overcome obstacles."
