This time of year, the weather is cold and everything seems to be a bit grey and gloomy, which is why I love Valentine’s Day.

February provides the perfect opportunity to add some festive fun and cheerful colours to your home.

When decorating for Valentine’s Day, it’s easy to achieve a high-end look on a budget – especially if you are willing to get a little crafty. Before I start decorating, I always like to check out all the fabulous ideas on Pinterest for inspiration and trends. I look for things I love, buy inexpensive supplies at the dollar store and get to work.

The most important thing to consider when creating Valentine’s Day decor is what type of style you are trying to achieve. You’ll also want to select a cohesive colour scheme. This year, I focused my efforts on creating modern farmhouse Valentine’s Day décor and because I live in a house with four boys, I used many shades of pink mixed with a black and white checkered pattern.

An easy way to create a fantastic Valentine’s Day vignette is to decorate a tiered tray. It’s a simple way to make a big impact in a small space. Here are my five best tips for DIYing a tiered tray for Valentine’s Day:

• Choose a cohesive colour scheme that ties everything together: I used white, various shades of pink and black and white checkered ribbon.

• Play with textures: I used wooden items, textiles, metal buckets and glassware. A variety of textures adds depth and interest to your display.

• Use what you have: You don’t always need to buy new things. You can easily repurpose items you already have in your home. For my tiered tray, I filled a candy jar with conversation hearts, an expresso mug with chocolate kisses and a little jar with pink and white buttons.

• Think outside the box: Valentine’s décor doesn’t just need to come from the Valentine’s section of a store. Check out the toy section, wedding items and floral aisle too. I found a beautiful white bucket and pink rose flower

ball in the wedding section at my local dollar store and it looks gorgeous on my tiered tray.

• Get crafty: A little DIY is a great way to create unique items and save money. I found a pallet sign in the craft aisle of my Dollarama for $1.25. I added a painted “X” and “O” (from an old Tic Tac Toe game my boys stopped playing with) and a bit of ribbon to create a little sign for my tiered tray. It only took me a few minutes to craft, it just cost a couple of dollars, it matches my colour scheme perfectly and it looks really high end.

Of course, once you are finished styling your tiered tray, you can start DIYing a wreath for your front door or making Valentine’s Day crafts with kids. When my boys were little, we always made yarn “love bugs” and used them to decorate the house. Pop on over to my blog (www. I hope you take some time during the next several days to add some simple and budget-friendly Valentine’s Day décor to your home. It’s easy, inexpensive and a wonderful way to bust through the winter blahs.
