Putting the spotlight on mental health
Eight daring and dedicated community leaders are warming up their vocal cords in anticipation of one of
Nova Scotia’s most exciting nights of fundraising.
BMO’s A Different Stage of Mind will take over the Halifax Convention Centre on May 6 as hundreds of people rally in support of the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Joining this year’s cast are Tom Hickey, serial entrepreneur and owner of T. Hickey Investments; Jacquelyn Miccolis, artist and owner of Sparkles N’ Sawdust Studio; Scott and Kevin Saccary, brothers, accomplished curlers and founders of
New Scotland Group of Companies; and a quartet of LGBTQ+ mental health advocates featuring Legal
Aid lawyer Morgan Manzer, pharmacist Will Babstock, mental health nurse Michael Cadegan and communications professional Lesley MacLean.
“The pandemic has placed a glaring spotlight on the importance of mental health,” says Starr Cunningham, Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia president and CEO.
“More Nova Scotians are acknowledging their struggles and seeking help so we need to fund more mental health support now so these Nova Scotians have access to the right care, in the right place, at the right time.”
BMO’s A Different Stage of Mind invites community leaders to step out of their comfort zone and become stars for one night complete with vocal coaching, choreography and cheering fans. Cast members commit to raising $50,000 for the foundation leading up to the event through ticket sales, sponsorships and donations.
During the past 18 years, A Different Stage of Mind has amassed more than $3.8 million for the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia while providing a voice for those living with mental illness and addiction.
“This is truly a signature event in our province combining a night of great entertainment and tremendous courage from the performers all in support of a most important cause,” says Justin Scully, BMO regional president personal banking. “The leadership of the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia has had a meaningful impact in eliminating stigma, raising awareness and improving access to care. We are proud to support this event and to be a part of this journey that is relevant to all Nova Scotian families.”
Hosted by Halifax Mayor Mike Savage, the variety show fundraiser will feature four outstanding performances shaped with guidance from musical director GaRRy Williams. Founder of DaPoPo Theatre, Williams is a fixture in the Halifax artistic community where he’s been making music and theatre for more than 20 years. Off-thecuff auctioneers Howard and Adam Conter will also bring their humour and fundraising expertise to the DSOM stage.
The Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia is inviting donors to pledge their support by becoming an official supporter or purchasing tickets to attend the event. Together, we can help meet the increasing demand for mental health and addiction support by raising vital funds for programs and initiatives in communities throughout Nova Scotia.
