It’s s’well for the environment

Water bottles and coffee tumblers are not usually considered fashion accessories.

Enter Sarah Kauss who decided she wanted something prettier to carry around for hydration. She thought the water bottle she was using looked like it belonged in a camping kit. With that idea, and $30,000, Kauss invented and introduced her first S’well water bottle in 2010.

S’well started with a 17 oz triple insulate water bottle.

The idea behind it was twofold: replace disposable hot or cold drink bottles and cups with something permanent and provide the consumer with a product that kept hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold. ‘O’ magazine featured it in 2011 and suggested adding more colour options.

Fast forward 11 years and there are more colours, patterns and product options than ever before. With a global need to reduce plastic, a stainless steel water bottle or coffee/tea tumbler is a very good choice. The water bottles have two styles: the Original, a 17 oz tall version (the one that started the business) and a shorter 16 oz Traveller. The water bottle is best for cold drinks while the Traveller could be either hot or cold. The 18 oz Tumbler is a third option, best for hot drinks, with a sliding cover to keep the heat in.

All the S’well products are triple layer insulated so there is great heat or cold retention and no sweating on the outside. All are stainless steel construction which means no staining or breaking. Both the Original and the Traveller will keep hot drinks hot for 24 hours and cold drinks cold for 12. The Tumbler has a different lid so hot stays hot for four hours and cold for 17. The Traveller has a silicon accessory option to give it ‘handles.’

When Covid-19 hit and schools had to shut down water fountains, it was a challenge to hydrate the kids. S’well launched Hydrate EDU and began gifting water bottles to schools. More than 17,000 bottles have been donated to over 50 schools in North America. It always makes it easier to invest in a product line that returns something to the community. And it makes me happier.

To date, S’well bottles have displaced more than four billion single use plastic bottles. That’s a lot of plastic.

There are choices when it comes to colours and patterns in the Original S’well water bottle. One feature I like is the texture on some bottles. It’s a bit easier to grip. As we get ready for summer and the need for water bottles and travel mugs heats up, think about investing in a product that hydrates and is eco-friendly. And looks fashion forward!
