Get a grip on your kitchen organization

I don’t know about you but by the time March rolls around, I’m getting a little antsy, feeling house bound. I decided to direct that energy into reorganizing the kitchen. Especially the drawers and cupboards where all the gadgets, food stuff and other things we use every day are stored.

It’s a momentous task. So, break it down. Take one drawer or cupboard and sort it out. Purge, be ruthless (will you ever use the half cup of cornmeal left from your attempt at cornmeal muffins in 2020?), and sort for recycling, compost and garbage. Recycling can include donating.

To help us get organized, and stay that way, Good Grips OXO has a variety of drawer and cupboard storage solutions.

If you start with your flatware drawer, and mine was a bit of a disaster, the Good Grips Utensil Organizer will keep all your forks, spoons and knives sorted neatly, in a very small space. You might even have room to put the Good Grips Knife Organizer in next to it. Now your knives are off the counter and you have more space. (That was my objective.) The Utility Organizer is perfect for neatly storing all sorts of odds and ends in your gadget drawer, including cooking and serving utensils.

When you are satisfied with the drawers, it’s time to look in the cupboards.

Again, after a deep breath, pull everything out of one cupboard and sort it out. We tend to use what’s in the very front so while there may be buried ‘treasures’ in the back, it’s more likely that those items are out of date, stale, or unnecessary.

One thing I did when I moved a few years ago was put everything I wasn’t sure I needed into a box. I put the box in the basement and if I didn’t use or need an item after a year, I donated it.

Good Grips have a fabulous collection of POP containers. I wrote about them a year or so ago, but it’s worth a revisit. There are so many sizes and shapes, with new additions this year.

The containers are clear BPA-free plastic with silicone sealing tops. You ‘pop’ the top down to seal it and un-pop to lift it off. These containers are perfect for all your baking needs such as flours, sugars, oats, nuts, and dried fruits. Use them for storing rice and grains, beans and lentils, cat or dog treats, and people treats. The containers stack, you can write on them or use labels, and everything is visible. Some people have created a baking drawer with them. It’s so easy to open and scoop.

If you have March cabin fever, channel that energy and use the month to get your kitchen organized. When Spring arrives, you will be ready for it.
