“We get to work from home. We walk about 20 feet to our little shop that is full of vintage and antique furniture and collectibles.”

With ancestral roots in Newfoundland, a cross-country relocation to Weymouth, Nova Scotia felt like something of a homecoming for Bev and John Hood.

The couple left Chilliwack, B.C. in July 2021 and three months later opened the doors of Goods at the Hoods’ Vintage & Antiques in North Weymouth. It was a dream come true to find a property with a home they loved and a small shop just a stone’s throw from their back deck.

“We get to work from home,” Bev says. “We walk about 20 feet to our little shop that is full of vintage and antique furniture and collectibles.”

Their property at 332 Fort Point Rd., is 20 minutes south of Digby and less than an hour’s drive to Yarmouth. The 106-year-old, fully renovated home sits just across the street from Saint Mary’s Bay. With a propane furnace, the shop is open year-round.

While living in Chilliwack the couple had operated Goods at the Hoods’ Vintage & Antiques for 10 years. Since they were in the vintage and antique furniture business, they decided to also offer paint lines made especially for revamping furniture.

Today the shop still carries Fusion Mineral Paint, General Finishes Milk Paint, Gel Stains and Topcoats, as well as the Cling On! line of paintbrushes from the Netherlands.

For those who are interested in painting their own furniture, but are not sure how, Goods at the Hoods’ offers workshops. Customers bring in their favourite piece of furniture and leave three hours later with it fully painted.

“We will walk you through every step of the process to make sure your paint project is a success,” Bev promises.

“It’s not like painting walls, for people who have never painted furniture before.”

After taking the workshop customers will often go home and put their skills to work on other pieces of furniture, she adds, thus saving them from the landfill.

Married happily since 2012, Bev and John have known each other since attending Grade 1 together in Otterburn Park, Quebec.

“We actually have some class pictures of us together,” Bev recalls. “It was a lovely area; we were surrounded by apple orchards.”

Their families went separate ways when Bev was in Grade 7, but in 2010, through the magic of social media, a reunification was set in motion.

“We became Facebook friends,” Bev recalls. “John was already living in B.C.”

After many lengthy telephone conversations Bev hopped on a plane for the west coast. The rest, as they say, is history.

They began their journey into the world of collectibles by going to weekend yard sales and then eventually having their own yard sale. What began as a sideline eventually became a business.

“John found a retail location and they agreed to let us rent month-to-month.”

They have met many interesting people in the 21 months since moving here, Bev says, many of whom, like themselves, have moved to Annapolis Valley from other parts of Canada.

“The people here are kind, welcoming and curious to know where we are from,” she says.

“We’re not big city people, so this is the perfect semi-retirement setting for us.”
