What do you do with 900 sheep? Start a revolution.

Revolution Wool Co. is a Canadian company located in Ontario, owned and operated by the Schill family. Romy, as mother to the flock, is also known as the ‘crazy sheep lady.’ Sheep farming is a family tradition and the side market of wool and wool products is growing quickly.

There was a time when most Canadian families had wool blankets on their beds, stuffed pillows for sleeping, and knitted socks and sweaters constantly. Then wool lost some of its popularity. It shrinks if not washed and dried properly so that didn’t fit with our wash-n-go lifestyle.

It can be itchy. And there’s a lot of work involved getting to a finished wool product. Romy is determined to bring back the tradition of wool, adding value and warmth to our lifestyles and economy.

Wool is an amazing thing, growing on a sheep into long strands that twist and curl together.

Sheering a sheep regularly gives the sheep better quality of life, allowing for better body heat regulation and reducing the weight load on those legs. When it’s first sheered, the wool is dirty and matted.

It needs to be washed, combed and then it can be made into finished products. The wool from Revolution Wool Co. is sent to mills to be carded into batts or spun into yarn.

Wool batts can be made into pillows or duvets and felted into dryer balls and warm insoles for boots. Yarn is knitted or woven into blankets, garments, socks and scarves.

Possibilities are endless for knitters. What makes wool such a great product for pillows and duvets? It’s the kinkiness of the fibre. Look at a strand of wool closely and it isn’t straight, even when its combed out. It’s kinky.

Those kinks hold moisture away from your skin, which is why hikers and others wear wool socks, creating tiny pockets of air. The pockets act like insulators, keeping you warm when you are cold or cool when you are hot. Moisture is naturally wicked away and then evaporates into the air.

Pillows and duvets have wool-proof covers over the batting, which keeps the itchy feeling away from direct contact with your skin. Now you are sleeping with natural fibres, with natural anti-bacterial products still in the wool, and your body can breathe.

The Revolution Wool Co. pillows are simple, just batts of carded wool rolled up and inserted into the casing. The casing zippers on so you can pull out the batt and cut a section off if you find it too firm. I did that with mine, cutting about 25 per cent of the length off. Now it’s perfect for side sleeping.

Maybe it’s time you joined the Revolution as wool is 100 per cent renewable, sustainable and fully biodegradable, plus the carbon footprint is low and you are supporting the Canadian economy. Oh, and your sleep is so good.
