Donovan named County's first Fire Services Coordinator
Victoria County Emergency Measures Coordinator (EMO) Lyle Donovan has been named the county’s first Fire Services Coordinator (FSC). In addition to the EMO and FSC part-time positions, Donovan is also a fulltime paramedic with EHS.
“I'm very excited for this. It's always been a passion of mine, since I've been a kid,” Donovan told The Standard via telephone June 30. He recounted hours spent as a child at the fire hall in Ingonish while his mother was secretary/treasurer of the local fire auxiliary.
Donovan says the start of the position is a work in progress. He and Victoria County Chief Administrative Officer Leanne Macheachen will first need to meet with fire chiefs across the county to assess their needs, and summer can be a difficult time to get everyone together.
“We want to find out from the chiefs and the deputy chiefs what their priorities are. I can foresee each department having a priority list and then we'll compare all those lists to see what the big priorities are.”
Donovan said he also looks forward to working with other fire service coordinators around the province, including Shawn Andrews from Guysborough County, who presented at Council last year. Donovan will bring his own skills and experience to the role, but he is quick to point out where his mandate will come from.
“I'm going to take direction from them,” said Donovan, referring to the county’s fire chiefs. “This is their position, they’re the ones who wanted it. So, I'm going to take direction from them through the CAO. She's still my boss and she's the one who calls the shots, but I think it's going to be a very good working relationship amongst the three entities - myself, the Municipality through the CAO, and the fire chiefs.”
