County looks to porta-potties to relieve washroom shortage

Victoria County Council voted on July 3 to look into the costs of renting porta-potties for the summer months.

Availability of public washrooms has been an ongoing issue in Victoria County. In 2017, Councillor Dauphinee said he received complaints from business owners about the use of washrooms by tourists during the summer months.

The Bras d’or Yacht Club was one of the few places in Baddeck with public washrooms, but they closed them off to the public at the beginning of May. The Club has said the annual expense of the public’s use of their washrooms was simply too high.

With the tourism season in full swing, Council recognized the need for temporary washrooms in some of the districts this summer. Districts 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8 have all asked for the washroom rentals this summer.

The County expects the nine units to cost approximately $9000. Funding for the washrooms will be sourced from general County funds as well as district budgets. Approval to rent the porta-potties will be discussed during the next meeting on July 24.
