BOLDCAMPS to offer after-school options
Bras d’or Lakes Day Camps Association is rolling out a new after-school pilot program in September. The group has been running summer day camps for the past two years and is looking to expand to a more year-round operation for young people in Victoria County.
Madison Greening, acting President for BOLDC, has said the program is going to offer diverse activities for kids from 5 to 14 years-old. The curriculum will offer numerous activities at BOLDC’S location in the former Kidston Landing store on Chebucto Street in Baddeck -- from homework assistance to a musical to be put on during March break. The musical begins auditions for campers in November, but Greening said there are spots for kids who may not want to be on stage.
"We're bringing in kids to do every aspect from costume design, stage, managing lights, audio, you know, all of the big picture stuff,” said Greening of their plans to stage a production.
BOLDCAMPS is currently run by a volunteer board and one full time staff co-ordinator. With the pilot program, the association is looking to hire two permanent staff members, with hopes for a third, if funding allows.
The pilot program will run from September to June, with its youth musical theatre portion beginning in November and ending with March break theatre performances. The association will also host all-day field trips during school in-service days to bring kids to one of the various attractions Cape Breton Island has to offer like the Gaelic College, the Bell Museum, Cape Breton Highlands National Park, the Amoeba and many others.
With the second summer of BOLDC’S day camps nearing completion, Greening has said the feedback she gets from parents has been positive and supportive of BOLDCAMP’S mission.
“My husband and I have a fiveyear-old and a nine-year-old who have been attending the camp all summer and we couldn’t be more pleased. This camp is worth every penny,” said Lorna Morrison.
BOLDC is having an information and registration session at 490 Chebuto Street in Baddeck on Thursday, Aug. 16 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.
