Car accelerates into Falls storefront

- HARLEY DAVIDSON hdavidson@postmedia,com

When Freedom Mobile on Dorchester Road advertised its door-buster sale, a vehicle crashing through the front of the store wasn’t exactly what it had in mind.

But at about 1 p.m. Saturday, that’s exactly what happened.

A grey Ford driven by an elderly woman accelerated quickly into the storefront at Monroe Plaza in Niagara Falls, said the store manager, Jason, who didn’t want his last name used.

He said at the time there were four customers inside.

One of the customers, a younger woman, was sitting on a couch right in front of the window when the car ploughed into it. She was not injured, but the store manager said she was startled and pretty shaken up.

He said she’s lucky for the amount of brick and concrete below the window.

“If this would have been wall to wall glass, she would have been toast.”

He said in light of nobody being injured, it’s sort of ironic that the store had just been having a doorbuster sale.

Both police and paramedics attended the scene. Nobody was taken to hospital.

It was unknown if the driver was charged but the store manager said he didn’t think she would be.

The incident occurred shortly after a similar incident in St. Catharines in which a car went through a restaurant storefront.
