Badgers go undefeated in regular season in women’s rugby

Katelyn Heyens, Taylour Hurd and Jenna Rainville each scored three tries to lead visiting Brock past Toronto 76-7 to end the women’s university rugby season undefeated.
“This was a great day for Brock women’s rugby,” said Stefanie Pavolich, whose Badgers went 4-0 in her second year as head coach.
Brock also will be playing in Toronto when the playoffs get underway Saturday with a quarter-final game against the York Lions, 1-3.
Meagan Hurt, with one try and four converts; Taylor Knezevich, four converts; Kaylah Moehling, one try; and Lauren Wilks, one also scored for Brock in Saturday ’s victory over the Varsity Blues, who fell to 1-3.
Rugby men in playoffs
Brock defeated Toronto 47-22 on the road Saturday in men’s university rugby clinching a playoff berth with three games remaining in league play.
The Badgers improved to 4-1 thanks to their defence and scoring from Ryan Hickey, two tries; Spencer Karn, five converts; Steve Commerford, Wade Little, Curtis Patrick and Zack White, one try apiece.
Brock hosts the first-place Queen’s Gaels, 5-0; in a 1 p.m. start Saturday at Alumni Field.
Badgers ground T’birds
Marilena Spagnolo recorded back-to-back shutouts and Brock swept Algoma in women’s university soccer on the weekend in Sault Ste. Marie.
Convincing victories over the Thunderbirds, 4-0, Saturday; 7-0, Sunday; improved the Badgers record to 4-4-3.
Cierra Bernicky, Brooke Boekestyn and Bethany Kromer, two goals each; and Ashley Harris found the back Sunday, with Harris, two goals; Sam Bayer and Kristen Bettencourt providing the offence Saturday.
