Canal Days gets new logo for 40th anniversary
Canal Days Marine Heritage Festival’s new logo is a visual celebration of the annual event and the City of Port Colborne.
The idea for a new logo had been in the works for about two years before coming to fruition. After reviewing a few different designs presented by Brand Blvd, a local promotions firm, the Canal Days Committee chose a brightly coloured logo that features no less than five shipping vessels, fireworks and Bridge 21.
“I’m very proud of this,” Luca Vallescura, creative director for Brand Blvd. said, after the unveiling of the logo to about a dozen people.
Mayor John Maloney said the Canal Days committee and city staff want to honour the past, but also evolve. Maloney said the committee is always looking for ways to improve Canal Days and the logo change is just one way of doing that.
The city also announced the title sponsor of next year’s Canal Days is Vale, which is a Brazilian multinational corporation involved in mining.
Maloney said it is great to have Vale, which is a big part of the community, sponsor the festival during important milestones for both the city and Vale. Next year Vale will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the plant, which produced nickel, colbalt and precious metals in the city.
Vale plant manager Joe Costigan said the plant has remained in the same location for the past 100 years. It has been a part of the community and Canal Days, which began in 1979, since it was first established.
Costigan said Vale and Canal Days wouldn’t be a success without the continued support of the community. By being a title sponsor for the festival, Costigan said it shows the continued support and partnership the community has with the city. Next year’s festival will take place from August 3 to 6.
