Welland, Port Colborne host family- friendly NYE activities

New Year’s Eve in Welland and Port Colborne will be packed full of free, fun family activities, both afternoon and evening.

For the 17th year, Welland has orchestrat­ed a number of activities at two locations: the Welland Community Wellness Complex and Main Arena.

The Wellness Complex is offering an array of things to do between 4 p. m. and 6 p. m. for kids of all ages.

Free activities include things such as a nine- hole mini- putt course, inflatable­s and face painting. Children will also have the opportunit­y to meet some of their favourite characters, including Peppa the Pig and the trio of kid superheroe­s from PJ Masks. A Minion dance party is also in the mix.

Meanwhile, at the Main Arena during the same timeframe, there will be glow- in- the- dark skating, games and treats for everyone to enjoy.

Fireworks are set to take place at 5: 50 p. m. along the canal.

Non- perishable food item donations are being accepted at both locations.

In Port Colborne, the fun begins a little earlier at 2 p. m., but also runs until 6 p. m. Activities take place at the Vale Health and Wellness Centre, 550 Elizabeth St. A full schedule is online atportcolb­orne.ca/page/New_Years_Eve. It includes activities such as skating, swimming, games and mad science shows. There will also be a banner set out for attendees to sign and the Canada 150 time capsule will be on display. Fireworks take place behind the Vale Centre at 6 p. m.

On New Year’s Day, Port Colborne hosts its annual new year’s levee in council chambers at city hall, 66 Charlotte St. The levee, which takes place from 1 p. m. to 3 p. m., is an opportunit­y for residents to meet the mayor and councillor­s.
