Wainfleet levee a social gathering for handful of visitors
There were no pressing municipal issues residents wanted to talk about with Wainfleet council at the township’s annual new year’s levee Sunday.
The levee was held at the busy 2X4 Diner at the corner of Regional Road 24 and Regional 27 from 1 p. m to 3 p. m. and saw Mayor April Jeffs and Alds. Betty Konc, Ted Hessels and Terry Gilmore attend. Ald. Richard Dykstra was unable to make the event.
David Fowler and his wife Janet Hodgkins were two of the less than dozen residents that attended.
“I’m a ’ Fleeter and I want to take part in everything Wainfleet does. We’re just here to enjoy ourselves,” said Fowler, adding the couple has been to levees in the past.
He said he’s already spoken to Jeffs about issues in the township that concern him.
“The main thing I want is to make sure Wainfleet stays rural,” Fowler said, adding he’s talked about the development at the former Lakewood Camp on Lakeshore Road.
A 41- unit condominium development has been proposed for the former Easter Seals camp on the shores of Lake Erie. Last summer Wainfleet council approved a report from township planning staff and consultants SGL Planning & Design Inc. for a zoning bylaw amendment, with a hold designation maintained; and a draft plan of condominium application, subject to numerous conditions, for the property owned by Lakewood Beach Properties Ltd. on Lakeshore Road west of Burnaby/ Belleview Beach Road.
Hodgkins said she finds the mayor and council very approachable.
“I can contact her at any time and she responds … the aldermen as well,” she said.
Roland Meisel, treasurer of Wainfleet Historical Society, said he came out for the social aspect of the levee.
“I know April through several different groups,” said Meisel, who attends the levee every year.
Meisel owns property in the township and said there were no particular issues on his mind.
