Ennis Steel owner ‘Bunny’ Ennis remembered

- DAVE JOHNSON

Bernard ‘Bunny’ Ennis is being remembered as a real gentleman and very successful businessman in the steel industry.

Ennis, former owner of Ennis Steel in Port Robinson, died at the age of 96 on Sunday, March 18 at Kensington Gardens in Toronto.

“I knew Bunny quite well. He and his family lived a few doors down from my family for as long as I can remember and they were close family friends. Ennis Steel was also a customer of (my company) Campion Marketing Services Limited,” said Mayor Frank Campion.

Ennis Steel, the main facility and corporate headquarters, was located on South Street North in Port Robinson.

“Bunny was a real gentleman in every sense. He was also a shrewd and very successful businessman in the steel industry,” said Campion.

He said Ennis had a great sense humour and he remembers the kind expression on his face.

“He would always take time for a brief conversation even when I was just a kid … he always had time. There was usually a cigar in the vicinity of Mr. Ennis,” said Campion.

Ennis was predeceased by his wife Edith and was the father and father-in-law of Elizabeth Ennis and Warren Milne, David and Kathy Ennis, and Matthew Ennis. He was brother and brotherin-law of Ruth and the late Joshua Segal, Rita and Marvin Weintraub, and the late Pearl and David Davis, and Julie and Lil Ennis.

He also leaves behind grandchildren Matthew and Tassie, Bradley and Samantha, Rebecca and Atalay, Rachel and Astrid, Daniel and Christyn, Alexander and Fallon, Laura, Zeb, and Adrian, and great-grandson Lucas.

A service was held Friday in Toronto, followed by interment in the Chevra Mishnayes Section of Mt. Sinai Memorial Park.
