Fans and racers will share in the spoils Saturday at Merrittville Speedway in Thorold.

Semenuk’s Esso will play host to Merrittville Speedway’s Championship Night, with fans and race teams sharing in cash and prize giveaways.

“Semenuk’s Esso Night has always hosted a great night for fans and racers,” Merrittville owner Don Spiece said. “Our hats off to the family and their customers for coming up with some great giveaways … we’ll be posting the purse additions prior to the weekend.”

When the green flag drops, the Season Point Finale for the S&W Service Centre 358 Modifieds will honour John Spencer, an up-and-coming racer who died as a result of a racing accident in 1953 at the former Stamford Park in his hometown of Niagara Falls.

The John Spencer Award was presented annually until the 1965 season. In 1999, former Merrittville owner Ken Kavanagh and his son, Rick, the reunion committee chairman, re-established the award.

Veteran champion Pete Bicknell is the defending John Spencer Memorial champion. The event was rained out in 2017.

In addition to the 358 Modifieds, the Bobcat of Hamilton Weekly Racing Series Event will feature the David Chevrolet sportsman, Hoosier Stocks, Vansickle Pet Valu and Groomingdale’s modified lites, Central Fabricating and Welding fourcylinders in addition to the Dave’s Auto & Speed Centre V6 divisions.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with showtime at 7 p.m.
