Cricket pitch slated for opening

-

Niagara Falls is getting in on a growing pastime with the opening of its first cricket pitch this weekend.

Ribbon will be cut at the pitch Sunday at 11:45 a.m. at John N. Allan Park on Kalar Road.

The pitch was installed in July using artificial turf and silica sand infill.

In order to meet the needs of local players, the city worked closely with Niagara Cricket Academy, which was established in 2012. The academy has grown to about 40 full-time players and has won several district level championships since its establishment. Prior to installing the turf, the club had to install matting for every game.

According to the city, its new recreational amenity has been well received by the community. The first match was held on July 15, between Niagara Cricket Academy and Oakville Cricket Club. Since then, about 12 club matches have been played on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

“The newly installed cricket pitch at John N. Allan Park is awesome and unquestionably the best in southern Ontario,” Amit Sharma, secretary of Niagara Cricket Academy, said in a news release. “The layout is perfect, the levels are perfect and the stump base on each end is perfect.”

Cricket is gaining in popularity, counting itself as one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. It is far more popular in other former Dominions of the British Empire, such as India, Pakistan, Australia and South Africa.

Mayor Jim Diodati said the pitch is a great addition to the city’s athletic offerings.

“Having the latest turf and a permanent playing surface offers one more way for athletes and recreational players to get outside, engage in our community, compete and play,” he said.

This project was made possible with the support of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. hosting fees in the amount of $25,000, which were paid to the city for hosting casinos.

Also Sunday, a cricket match between Niagara Cricket Academy and Stoney Creek Cricket Academy will take place at 12:15 p.m. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
