Viva Trio to perform diverse lineup

- KRIS DUBÉ

For people who like diverse styles of music, this weekend’s Welland-Port Colborne Concert Association show should hit some high notes.

The show by Viva Trio on Saturday will include operatic classics and even renditions of songs by rockers such as Metallica.

The award-winning group from Toronto, accompanied by renowned conductor-pianist Sabatino Vacca, will take the stage at Welland Centennial Secondary School’s 1,000-seat J.M. Ennis Auditorium.

With an eclectic lineup of songs, some that will have a holiday theme, the performance will be one to remember, says concert association spokesperson Cheryl Maurice.

“These girls are the whole package,” she says.

The concert series annually supports a local high school student who is pursuing a career in the arts with a bursary, and also raises money for stage and lighting improvements at the venue — one Vacca views as a local gem.

“People who have never been are always surprised Welland has such a beautiful theatre,” says Vacca.

Katya Tchoubar, a member of Viva Trio, which is made up of three sopranos, says she and her bandmates are anticipating a great show that will be enjoyed by locals, as well as the vocalists’ friends and family who will also make the trip from Toronto.

Coming off a Midwest U.S. tour last year, Viva Trio is also getting ready for a trip to the U.S. West Coast in 2019.

The title of the group’s debut album, “Nothing Else Matters,” is also the name of a track written and recorded by heavy metal icons Metallica that will be a part of the trio’s set list on Saturday.

“We really love that piece,” Tchoubar said of the ballad that was considered much softer than Metallica’s other material when it was released in 1991.

“It’s the first thing that piloted the feeling of the album,” she said.

The members of Viva Trio have eclectic tastes, she added.

“All three of us — we have vast interests in other genres other than classical.”

Other covers the crowd might hear are Sia’s “Bird Set Free” and Adele’s “Hello.”

Each member of Viva Trio, Anna Bateman, Erin Fisher and Tchoubar, has a long list of solo credits including numerous operatic roles, classical concerts, musical theatre, pop and jazz.
