Welland will be illuminated with holiday spirit on Saturday when the Santa Claus parade comes to town.

As usual, it will begin at Wellington Street near Canadian Tire Financial Services then head west along East Main Street on its way to the civic square.

Municipal staff have been busy recently getting the City of Welland’s float ready for the big day by stringing close to 500 lights, making sure several inflatable characters are standing upright, and carefully placing many other items on the decorative trailer.

Jason Quinn, a carpenter with the city, said he is always proud to be a part of getting the elaborate instalment ready for the parade in order to create memories for young children who will line the street in awe of the spectacle.

“It’s all about the kids. It’s really neat,” he said while putting some finishing touches on the display stored at the municipal services centre on Federal Road.

Saturday’s parade starts at 4 p.m., making it extra special when the daylight disappears, said the city worker.

“Illuminated parades are the only way to go,” said Quinn.

Along the route, Canada Post carriers will be collecting letters to Santa. The mayor’s youth advisory council will be collecting donations for Open Arms Mission.

At Welland Civic Square, Santa will use his magic to light the city’s giant tree then proceed inside for visits with the kids who hope to make his good list.

There will also be face painting, crafts, hot chocolate and special treats from Talent 2 Design, a new downtown business. “Prep & Landing,” a Disney movie, will be featured on the outdoor big screen.
