Poinsettias donation an act of kindness

- KRIS DUBÉ

It’s a simple gesture that has gone a long way for more than 25 years at Welland hospital.

Members of Fonthill and District Kinsmen Club were at the Niagara Health site Saturday morning to deliver 165 poinsettias to the 75 people living in the hospital’s extended care unit.

It was to let them know they are in the Kins’ thoughts, said Kevin Twomey, publicity director for the club.

“Maybe this will be bring back memories of a joyous time,” said Twomey, pointing out that the donation would not be possible without various events the Kinsmen host, such as their annual home and craft shows.

“When the community supports us, we can do stuff like this,” he said.

“It’s a highlight on our calendar.”

Steve Bronn, poinsettia campaign chairman, said it’s rewarding to be able to brighten the holidays for residents of the hospital ward who are receiving long-term care.

“If they can’t get out, at least we can cheer them up,” he said.

One of the people who is able to decorate her space at the hospital after the visit from the Kinsmen is Robin Clapp, who has been in the unit since she suffered a stroke 15 years ago.

“Everybody looks forward to it,” she said about the annual act of kindness.

Recreational therapy assistant Katie Boss said the Christmas donation is a major boost to morale during the holidays and that for many residents the gesture takes them back to their time before their hospital stay.

“It’s like a piece of home for them,” she said.

The Kinsmen Club is inviting the public to its Christmas dinner party at Meridian Community Centre in Pelham, which takes place Wednesday at 7 p.m.
