Conditional sentence for road rage attack on pregnant woman

- ALISON LANGLEY

The victim of a road rage incident told court she continues to struggle with fear and anxiety and dreads getting behind the wheel of a car.

“I pull over and cry,” the 25year-old wrote in a victim impact statement presented in Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines Monday.

“I feel like I shouldn’t drive at all.”

Port Colborne resident John McAdam on Monday received a 12-month conditional sentence on several charges including dangerous driving and uttering threats.

For the first six months of the sentence, the 62-year-old will be under house arrest.

On Nov. 1, 2017, court was told, the defendant rammed his vehicle into the victim’s vehicle several times in the Lakeshore and Station roads area in Wainfleet.

The victim was almost nine months pregnant at the time and was taken to hospital for observation. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl several weeks after the collision.

“You were not physically harmed but you are left with demons in your mind that you will, hopefully, put in the right place,” Judge Tory Colvin told the young woman.

“Don’t let this incident define your life.”

The judge also placed the defendant on probation for two years and ordered him to take anger management counselling. He was also banned from driving.
