The ongoing campaign in support of the new south Niagara hospital has received a $5-million boost from a local company.

Spencer Fox, of E.S. Fox Ltd., this week pledged $5 million to Niagara Health Foundation’s It’s Our Future campaign in support of the hospital to be built at the intersection of Biggar and Montrose roads in Niagara Falls.

The pledge was inspired by Spencer Fox’s son Ben, who suffered a stroke at age 15 due to a carotid artery dissection that impacted his left side. Following his recovery, Ben became an advocate for heart disease and stroke awareness and fundraising efforts.

In recognition of the contribution, the stroke centre at the hospital will be named the Fox Family Stroke Centre of Excellence.

Based in Niagara Falls, E.S. Fox is a multi-trade fabricator and constructor specializing in the industrial, commercial, institutional and nuclear industries. Spencer Fox took over the company from his father in 1998 when Edward Fox was diagnosed with lung cancer.

“My father believed strongly in the hospital and thought it was important to keep the equipment and facilities as up to date as possible,” Spencer Fox said.

The family has been a longtime supporter of health care in Niagara, with their support spanning nearly four decades.

“They have once again shown incredible philanthropic leadership with a lasting and impactful gift that will contribute to timely, lifesaving care for all Niagara residents,” said Lynn Guerriero, Niagara Health president and chief executive officer.

To date, more than $20.7 million has been pledged in support of the 469-bed hospital.

Construction is expected to begin later this year, with the hospital to open in the fall of 2026.
