Algoma Central Corp. is the newest naming sponsor for one of the two ice pads inside Walker Sports and Abilities Centre at Canada Games Park.

The company, headquartered in St. Catharines, operates the largest fleet of dry and liquid bulk carriers operating on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.

The 1,200-seat arena, now known as Algoma Central Arena, has glass walls that allow for added light and viewing of the atrium and will play host to athletes competing in the Canada Summer Games Aug. 6 to 21.

“We are proud to be a part of the legacy of the Canada Games and for the Algoma Central name to join the sponsorship community with other prominent Niagara businesses and families,” said Gregg Ruhl, Algoma president and chief executive officer.

“Algoma has called Niagara home for over 50 years, and we are thrilled to see this state-of-the-art facility come to life right here in our backyard.

“At Algoma, we are passionate about having a positive impact in our communities, and the Walker Sports and Abilities Centre at Canada Games Park aligns with that passion through the opportunities it will provide to Niagara residents of all ages and abilities.

“I am looking forward to seeing our Algoma bear, a symbol of strength and stability, adorn the walls of the arena at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games and for years to come.”

The rink is parasport compatible and will host sledge hockey games and tournaments. The ice pad has been constructed below the surrounding floor level so spectators in wheelchairs can easily watch the action without their view obstructed by boards.

The arena will become home to the Brock University Badgers men’s and women’s hockey programs and during the off-season will be used for box lacrosse.

The naming rights include the hosting and media box on the second floor overlooking the arena.

Niagara Region Chair Jim Bradley said the announcement is great news for residents.

“Algoma Central Corp. has been an anchor in Niagara’s economy for decades,” he said.

“Its involvement with Canada Games Park shows their ongoing commitment to the community where they are doing business and it shows employees and the regional community Algoma’s sense of purpose and pride.”

The facility is at the corner of Merrittville Highway and Sir Isaac Brock Way in Thorold. It will be the main venue for competitions during the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games, which were delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Region, City of St. Catharines, City of Thorold and Brock formed a long-term agreement and a consortium to manage and operate it following the Games.
