NIEUWESTEE­G, Edward 'Ed'

Passed away peacefully, with his wife and children by his side, at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at the age of 63. Beloved husband of 35 years to RuthAnn (nee Patterson). Loving and proud father of Ryan and Dr. Alexandra 'Ally' Nieuwestee­g. Survived by his siblings Diane Nieuwestee­g (John Stewart), Yolanda Nieuwestee­g, Charlotte (Paul) Spilka, Jerry (Janet) Nieuwestee­g, Peter Nieuwestee­g, Rob (Siren) Nieuwestee­g, and sister-in-law Sandra (Brian) Smith. He will be fondly remembered by his aunt Cathy Nieuwestee­g as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predecease­d by his parents Gerry and Lia (nee Van der Vooren) Nieuwestee­g, parents-in-law Francis and Patricia Patterson, brother Art (Carol) Nieuwestee­g and sister -in-law Mary Frances Patterson. Ed grew up in Niagara Falls, was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, and later Sir Wilfred Laurier. In 1990, Ed graduated with first class honours from Humber College with a diploma in the Funeral Service Education program - and was proud of receiving the Wilfred Scott Academic Award for the highest grade in Anatomy. In 1997, Ed and his wife Ruth-Ann took over the day-to-day operations of her family's business, Patterson Funeral Home. Ed served on many community boards, most notably as Chair of the YMCA for 10 years, as a Niagara Catholic District School Board Trustee for 20 years, and recently on the Board of Heartland Forest. Ed will forever be remembered for his generosity, sense of humour and kind spirit. Friends are invited to join the family at the PATTERSON FUNERAL HOME, 6062 Main St. Niagara Falls, visiting Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, April 22, 2024 at 11 a.m., at St. Patrick's Church, with the Rite of Committal to follow at Fairview Cemetery. In accordance with Ed's wishes, memorial contributi­ons may be made to Heartland Forest, where an accessible playground is to be named in his honour.
