… reflecting back on Friday, April 6, 1951
Re-live the past as The West Coast Wire commemorates this week in history by looking back at some of the sights and major stories featured in editions of The Western Star from years gone by.
This week, we travel back in time to April 6, 1951, when Deer Lake established its first town council, officially taking over jurisdiction of the town from Bowater’s, Grand Falls took the Star Trophy in the inter-paper town hockey series vs. Corner Brook, and the mechanical Broomball team dynasty took home another Lewin Trophy and the Bay of Islands championship.
Here are some of the stories featured prominently on the front page:
“Alfred & Emily First To Strike Main Patch”
The Alfred & Emily, the three-masted schooner owned by A.W. Payne, Curling and captained by Job Kean of Corner Brook, sailed from Corner Brook on March 13, 1951.
Three days out of port, the vessel was in the Northumberland Strait and on St. Patrick’s Day the first seals of the year were killed.
“Brush Fire Causes Alarm in C.B. West”
On Wednesday afternoon, the Corner Brook West Fire Brigade was summoned to extinguish fires at the upper end of Caribou Road and at the rear of Fred Tiller’s house on Carmen Avenue where a grass and brush were on fire.
The dump fire was quickly extinguished although a burst hose length meant several people were soaked in the vicinity.
The Tiller house fire was caused by several boys who had been burning rubbish.
A bucket brigade was required to prevent the flames from reaching the home.
