Coun­selling avail­able at Dis­cov­ery Col­le­giate fol­low­ing fa­tal ac­ci­dent

Dis­cov­ery Col­le­giate in Bon­av­ista has opened its doors to the com­mu­nity fol­low­ing this week­end’s fa­tal ATV ac­ci­dent.

The school opened Sun­day and again Mon­day as a place for fam­i­lies and friends to gather to com­fort one an­other.

Pro­fes­sional coun­sel­lors were on site as well.

“It’s a shock to the whole com­mu­nity,” said Mayor Betty Fitzger­ald.

“To lose a child is the most dev­as­tat­ing thing that can hap­pen to any­body.”

A a fa­tal side-by-side ATV col­li­sion that hap­pened in the com­mu­nity Satur­day af­ter­noon.

Around 3 p.m. Bon­av­ista RCMP, Few­ers Am­bu­lance and the Bon­av­ista Fire Depart­ment re­sponded to a sin­gle side-by­side crash on a lo­cal ATV trail. The four-wheeler had rolled-over.

There were three oc­cu­pants on the ve­hi­cle at the time of the col­li­sion. The driver, a fe­male youth, suf­fered se­ri­ous in­juries and was trans­ported to hos­pi­tal, where she died of her in­juries a short time later.

The two pas­sen­gers, also youths, re­ceived mi­nor in­juries.
