Atlantic beach volleyball tour to be regular thing
The sport should be a common summer practice in Corner Brook.
The beach volleyball program is only in its second full season in this province, but Finton Gaudette believes there is a bright future when it comes to growing the game.
Gaudette, the driving force behind the Corner Brook Beach Volleyball Association, is all smiles after his group played host to an Atlantic Beach Volleyball Tour stop this past weekend in Corner Brook.
He was happy to have so many of the players praise organizers for a job well done and he was glad to hear players from both central and the east coast were impressed enough to say they would be promoting beach volleyball to players on the east coast.
The action was non-stop for three days under a scorching sun with temperatures hovering in the high 20s as male and female players in both minor and adult divisions dug their toes into the sand at the Corner Brook beach volleyball facility.
“We couldn’t have ordered better weather,” Gaudette said. Gaudette admit she had room for a couple of more teams, but recognized that this year is a tough year to host a tour stop because 2017 happens to be a Canada Games year so many of the top players weren’t available to play in the tour stop because they were busy participating in other major events used to get the teams ready for the Games.
The good news is that Corner Brook will now be a regular stop on the Atlantic Beach Volleyball Tour so more players will be enticed to give it a whirl next summer.
“For us it’s really going to profile the game,” he said.
Even more exciting for Gaudette is the realization that next year’s tour would have to spread over two weekends with minor on one and adult on a separate weekend.
“If we get any bigger we’re not going to be able to host it on those two courts,” he said. “It’s a very good problem to have.”
Corner Brook will be sending four teams to the Atlantic Beach Volleyball Championship at Parlee Beach in Shediac, N.B., during the first week of August.
