MAN DEAD AF­TER VE­HI­CLE GOES OVER CLIFF

One man is dead af­ter an ac­ci­dent in Bon­av­ista Tues­day in which a ve­hi­cle went over a cliff.

About 12:30 p.m., Bon­av­ista RCMP re­sponded to a sin­gle ve­hi­cle crash near Dun­geon’s His­tor­i­cal Site, close to Cape Bon­av­ista.

The ve­hi­cle was ob­served driv­ing over a cliff and ended up un­der wa­ter with one man in­side.

Am­bu­lance and fire de­part­ment per­son­nel were on the scene with po­lice of­fi­cers from the Bon­av­ista and Clarenvill­e RCMP de­tach­ments.

The Joint Res­cue Co-or­di­na­tion Cen­tre dis­patched a he­li­copter from 103 Squadron in Gan­der, which low­ered search and res­cue tech­ni­cians into the wa­ter. A man’s body was re­cov­ered and was trans­ported to shore by the Cana­dian Coast Guard. Ef­forts to re­trieve the ve­hi­cle were con­tin­u­ing Tues­day.

An RCMP traf­fic ser­vices an­a­lyst was en route to the scene.

The Of­fice of the Chief Med­i­cal Ex­am­iner and po­lice are con­tin­u­ing the in­ves­ti­ga­tion.
