The Western Star - - LIFE -

This was the final board of the 1964 Olympiad semi-final match between Great Britain and Italy's famed Blue Team.

Great Britain was behind 126 -115 Imps and gained 5 imps but lost the match 126 - 120 . If Konstam and Gray had managed to stop in four spades, their +620, in combination with Reese and Schapiro's +300, would have been a swing of 14 Imps so Great Britain would have advanced to the final by a score of 129-126!

The Italians went on to defeat the US by 46 Imps in the final.

The book describes some of the most memorable bridge matches of the last fifty years in world championship play (up to 2001) including amazing comebacks and down to the wire finishes.

This interesting read is available for $25.95 from Vince Oddy's Bridge Books & Supplies, Tel: 1-800-463-9815. The contract finished down one since East owned two trump winners, N-S -100.

At the other table, the Italians reached six diamonds where declarer finished down three after the defense began with ace and another heart, N-S 300.
