CAN­DI­DATES FOR QALIPU ELEC­TION START MAKING IN­TEN­TIONS KNOWN

COR­NER BROOK — Nom­i­na­tions have not been for­mally ac­cepted yet, but a few peo­ple have al­ready launched their cam­paigns to be elected to the next Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Na­tion Band coun­cil. The elec­tion is set for Oct. 23 with an ad­vance poll set for Oct. 16 and mail-in bal­lot ap­pli­ca­tions now avail­able on the band’s web­site.

A vot­ers list should be avail­able af­ter the up­dat­ing found­ing mem­bers list is re­leased at the end of Au­gust. The band’s of­fice said a call for nom­i­na­tions will be made shortly af­ter that list comes out. Hay­ward Young of Stephenvil­le Cross­ing, who had pre­vi­ously in­ti­mated run­ning, has con­firmed he will be seek­ing to be­come the band’s new chief. Two Cor­ner Brook men, Keith Cormier and Ron Jesseau, have an­nounced their can­di­dacy for the po­si­tion of western vice-chief on the next coun­cil.
