What we’re do­ing about the fed­eral elec­tion

Be­tween now and the Oct. 21 vote, SaltWire is de­ploy­ing dozens of jour­nal­ists across New­found­land and Labrador, Nova Sco­tia and Prince Ed­ward Is­land to pro­vide en­gag­ing and in-depth cov­er­age of lo­cal, re­gional and na­tional is­sues.


Our ul­ti­mate goal is to gen­er­ate elec­tion con­tent that’s re­ally use­ful to you. We want our words, pho­tos and videos to teach you some­thing new, pro­vide per­spec­tives you may not have con­sid­ered and help give you com­plete com­fort dis­cussing the is­sues with fam­ily, friends and col­leagues. We want to fuel those im­por­tant con­ver­sa­tions — at home, at work, at the rink or at the pub — and fos­ter en­gage­ment as we head to the polls. An in­formed elec­torate is crit­i­cal to your com­mu­nity.

It’s a six-week cam­paign (and it’s not like we didn’t know it was com­ing). So we’ve got teams of re­porters and con­trib­u­tors fo­cus­ing on what’s hap­pen­ing lo­cally and go­ing deep on ma­jor is­sues like the econ­omy and cli­mate change. Our team, peo­ple like Jim Vib­ert and Rus­sell Wanger­sky, will of­fer opin­ions on is­sues, plat­forms and de­vel­op­ments. Plus, we’re invit­ing some guest con­trib­u­tors to share their per­spec­tives on ev­ery­thing from democ­racy to the econ­omy. We’ll also of­fer broader na­tional and global cov­er­age of the cam­paign from PostMedia and Reuters.


Read­ers will see can­di­date pro­files, cov­er­age of is­sues with lo­cal and na­tional im­pact, and po­lit­i­cal com­men­tary from colum­nists and car­toon­ists. We’ll be pre­sent­ing some of the con­tent in dif­fer­ent ways than be­fore. And there’ll be many calls to ac­tion — things you can do to con­trib­ute to the con­ver­sa­tion — as the cam­paign moves along. On elec­tion night, we’ll have com­pre­hen­sive cov­er­age of the win­ners, the losers and what might come next.


We’ve started rolling out some elec­tion con­tent on­line, in print and on so­cial me­dia. The next in­stal­ment of our Deep Dives se­ries into next-gen vot­ers drops Fri­day and our over­all cov­er­age will only amp up from there. Over the next six weeks, we’ll be pub­lish­ing hun­dreds of elec­tion sto­ries to achieve our goal.
