-

JUNE 17

7:42 AM | A member of the OPP West Region Highway Safety Division was travelling southbound on Wellington Road 6 on a fully marked OPP motorcycle when he was nearly struck head on by a northbound vehicle who had pulled out to pass. The officer was forced to brake hard and take evasive action as the 2012 Ford approached him head on in the southbound lane. The Ford swerved back into the northbound lane and lost control on the paved portion of the roadway, struck the gravel and entered the east ditch. The officer approached the driver and immediately detected the odour of alcohol on his breath. A roadside screening test was conducted, which resulted in a fail. As the officer interacted more with the driver he displayed more signs of impairment including slurred speech and red, glossy eyes. He was transported to a local detachment for further testing. The investigation revealed that the licence plates for the vehicle were expired. A 28-year-old Mapleton Township man was charged with ‘impaired driving’ and ‘drive motor vehicle no currently validated permit.’ His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for a period of seven days as per statute. He is to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on June 28 to answer to the charges.
