Four young people charged after prom party gets out of hand

DURING THE EARLY HOURS of June 11, officers of the Waterloo Regional Police Service and Perth County OPP responded to a disturbanc­e at an address between New Hamburg and Shakespear­e.

Investigat­ion revealed that a large after prom party for students of a Kitchener high school was being hosted at the rural residentia­l address on Line 41. Assaults were reported to police and subsequent investigat­ion resulted in criminal charges being laid on four Kitchener residents.

A 19-year-old male was charged with ‘assault,’ two counts of ‘theft under $5,000,’ ‘resist peace officer,’

4:46 PM | A fatal motor vehicle collision took place along Northfield Drive East near Line 86 in the Township of Woolwich. The collision occurred after a vehicle crossed into the opposing lane of traffic and was struck by a dump truck. A 23-year-old Elora man was pronounced deceased and ‘fail to comply with sentence.’

A 17-year-old male was charged with ‘assault.’

Two 18-year-old males were charged with ‘assault.’

All four were ordered to appear at the Stratford Court of Justice in July, where they will be answering to their charges.

The OPP reports it has issued numerous warnings about parties where large number of underage teenagers will be in attendance. These gatherings often take place in bush lots, fields, barns, or in private residences. Many times they involve alcohol consumptio­n by underage individual­s and they often get out of control. at the scene. The driver of the dump truck was taken to hospital and released with minor injuries. Speed of the deceased man’s vehicle is believed to have been a contributi­ng factor in the collision. Drug and alcohol use are not considered to be a factor at this point in the investigat­ion, which is ongoing.
