Elmira cenotaph to be revamped
Plans to revamp the cenotaph in Elmira moved ahead this week, as Woolwich council awarded a $96,000 contract to I.M Benjamins O/A Hardscape Concrete & Interlock to carry out the work.
The project, including concrete and brick inlays, planters, landscaping and lighting, is designed to greatly enhance the Memorial Park site, which in recent years saw the replacement of the decades-old marble soldier with a bronze replacement. (The original soldier, dating back to the 1920s, was restored and is now on display at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.)
The original budget of $100,000 has been bumped up to $108,000 by drawing on reserve funds.
About half the funding will come from a combination of a Canada 150 grant ($35,480) and pledges from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 469 ($25,000). station co-located with the new fire station in Breslau. This station will improve coverage in the Breslau, Bloomingdale and Bridgeport areas, as well as at the Region of Waterloo International Airport. Construction is expected to begin in late 2016 or early 2017 and be completed in late 2017. meeting June 28.
The township’s share of the tax revenue due to the reductions is $3,476.86. The remaining funds are split between the Region of Waterloo, which grabs half of your tax bill, and the school boards, which account for more than a third.
Such write-offs are typically the result of changes in status, such as the demolition of a building on the property, a vacancy, or the property changing its classification, for example a bed & breakfast (assessed as commercial) is converted back to a family residence (assessed at the lower residential rate).
