8:00 AM | Police marked the 10th anniversary of a fatal hitand-run collision with an appeal for public assistance. On a dark stretch of road, just a few minutes past midnight, 18-year-old Lucas Shortreed of Fergus was struck by a vehicle and killed on Wellington Road 17, north of Elora. The vehicle, possibly a white, mid-1990s Dodge Neon, was travelling away from Alma towards Highway 6 when it hit Shortreed as he walked. The vehicle then fled the scene leaving shattered pieces of glass and car parts behind. Wellington County OPP still considering this case to be open. They’re asking anyone with information to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).

7:30 PM | Wellington County OPP received a report of a two vehicle collision on private property. A driver had backed his vehicle into a parked vehicle in the parking lot of a licenced restaurant in Fergus, and Initial reports suggested that the driver may have been intoxicated. While speaking with the driver, officers formed the opinion that he was impaired by alcohol. He was arrested and brought to a local OPP operations centre for further testing. No one was injured in the crash. The 61-year-old Fergus man was charged with ‘impaired operation of a motor vehicle’ and ‘driving with over 80 mgs of alcohol in 100ml of blood.’ His licence was suspended for 90 days and his car seized for seven days. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on November 9.
